Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has invited Rory McIlroy to Old Trafford following the Northern Irishman’s Masters victory on Sunday.
The 35-year-old completed golf’s career grand slam in Augusta, adding the elusive Masters trophy to his US Open, PGA Championship and the Open Championship titles, which he won between 2011 and 2014.
McIlroy had not won a major in 11 years before his Masters victory, and Amorim said he wants the “feeling” of his seemingly “impossible” feat at Old Trafford.
“Hi Rory,” Amorim said via United’s official website. “Congratulations for The Masters and I want to invite you to Old Trafford to show your trophy.
“It is really important to us in this moment. You achieved something that a lot of people thought would be impossible and we want that feeling in our stadium.
“So, I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford and to meet you.”
McIlroy, a United fan, was also invited to Old Trafford in August 2014 after winning The Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club and the PGA Championship, his most recent major victory before Sunday’s success.

United last won the Premier League title in 2012-13, eight months after McIlroy clinched his first PGA Championship trophy with an eight-shot victory over second-placed David Lynn.
Amorim’s side slipped to 14th in the Premier League table with a 4-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday. United have not finished in the bottom half of the table since the Premier League’s formation in 1992.
They face Lyon at Old Trafford in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday. The two sides drew 2-2 in the first leg, with Rayan Cherki putting the Ligue 1 side level in the fifth minute of stoppage-time.
